Skills and Competencies of a Health Education Specialist
This purpose of this assignment was to create a health education curriculum. My group chose to create a curriculum for low-income Latino/Hispanic adults in Long Beach who are type 2 diabetics. This project is important because it's hard for people who develop this disease in later life to make the necessary behavioral changes to keep themselves healthy, especially those who live in low-income areas.
The project pertains to areas I, III, and IV because I defined the priority population to be assessed, developed materials to implement the plan, and developed questions to be answered by the evaluation.
For this project, I was able to use the cdcynergy application to explore a wide range of possible strategies for a public health problem, develop a comprehensive communication plan, and use research to help describe/determine the causes of the health problem that my group planned to address with an intervention. In this case, we chose distracted driving. This is a huge issue we wanted to tackle because as people become busier, they begin to take on the bad habit of driving while distracted. They might eat, do their makeup, text, etc. while they are behind the wheel which is a problem that leads to unfortunate accidents.
This project covers areas II, V, and VII of the skills and competencies of a health education specialist. The reason for this is because I was able to evaluate financial needs and resources, develop program budgets, manage relations with stakeholders, manage technology resources and engage stakeholders in advocacy initiatives. In the future I hope to be able to do the same with different projects.
In this presentation, I discussed what opioid addiction is, why it's harmful, some of the risk factors, etc. The importance of this project was to educate others on reliable information regarding opioid addiction.
This presentation applies to area IV of the Health Education specialists responsibilities because I was able to obtain and disseminate health-related information. In addition, I identified valid information sources and listed them at the end of the presentation.
